2008年的奖学金评选从公布之日起，收到了来自中国及香港和台湾地区、日本、韩国、新加坡、新西兰、澳大利亚等48所著名高校和研究机构的近百名优秀博士生的积极申请。在经过微软亚洲研究院评委会的严格评审和认真考核之后，最终共有32位博士生脱颖而出，获得了“微软学者”称号，同时将得到研究院提供的兹在促进计算机研究发展的资助。

“微软学者”奖学金获是微软亚洲研究院推出的旨在吸引亚太地区最优秀的计算机及相关专业的博士生进一步留在本国开展研究的人才培养方案。该奖学金项目从1999年春季开始实施，到2008年为止已经推出第十届，共有来自近50所高校和研究机构的259位优秀博士生获得了“微软学者”奖学金。 “微软学者”奖学金为获奖学生创造优越的研究环境，并提供参加国际学术会议与世界级专家交流的机会及来研究院实习的机会，以此来鼓励获奖博士生和世界一流的科学家之间的交流和沟通。
