Academic Symposium Introduction
The 8th annual "Computing in the 21st Century" conference will be hosted on October 24th (Tuesday) in Beijing. The conference is jointly organized by Microsoft Research Asia, Tsinghua University, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. This year's conference theme is "The Challenge of Quality Software." The world is well into the transition from computing as an important component to computing as the central component of many human activities. Reliable, predictable, and secure operation of computerized systems and computing services is critical, yet increasing functionality and complexity make such operation a challenge to ensure.

As in previous years, the distinguished lineup of conference speakers consists of world renowned international scholars and computing experts including Turing Award recipients and members of the USA National Academy of Engineering. These academic and industrial leaders will share their ideas and vision on software computing trends during their keynote speeches.

The first international "Computing in the 21st Century" conference was held in 1999, shortly after the founding of Microsoft Research Asia. The conference is intended by its organizers to create an academic exchange facilitating communications and collaboration between Chinese and international scholars. Due to the great support for this conference, a unique opportunity for Chinese computer scientists to learn from their peers around the world regarding the newest technical advances and trends in computer science has been created.
